Cyber Warfare Ukraine: CaddyWiper
Cyber Warfare Ukraine: CaddyWiper
This design visualizes a portion of the latest variant of CaddyWiper malware deployed by the Russia-linked cyber threat group known as Sandworm in a cyber attack against a Ukrainian energy provider.
The CaddyWiper malware has been used in recent attacks against Ukrainian businesses and utility companies. On April 8th, 2022 it was used in an attack against a Ukrainian energy provider which featured an update to the Industroyer malware first used in 2016 to cut power to Ukraine. The goal of the Inustroyer2 attack was to gain control of a Ukrainian energy provider substation, likely to cut power, and then to activate the CaddyWiper malware to destroy evidence of the attack by wiping the infected systems. The attack was detected and prevented before harm could be done.
